Jumping the Broom

Jumping The Broom
Most often jumping of the broom occurs during the recessional, as the couple turn to head back down the aisle. The couple jumps over a decorated broom laid on the ground before them,  while holding hands. This symbolizes the cutting of ties with the old life before they were together and represents the old remnants being swept away. The straw end represents the brushing away of all their old cares and worries. The strong wooden handle represents the strength of your commitment to each other, and the straight, unconditionally committed path you will follow together in marriage. The leap that the couple takes over the broom is also symbolic. Starting a new life with another person does require a "leap of faith". But by taking the leap, the individuals make a gesture of dedication to working together through the tough times ahead and the willingness to care for and defend one another. Some say that whoever jumps the highest will be the boss of the house!

Families and Friends ceremony

Family and Friends Response (Placed after Couples Vows)
Marriage is the promise of hope between two people who love each other, who honor each other as individuals, and who wish to unite their lives and share the future together. In this ceremony, they dedicate themselves to the happiness and well-being of each other, in a union of mutual caring and responsibility. Therefore, it is all the more important that those of you here with _______ and ______ may stand as witnesses to the happiness which they have found together, and to the promises they have made to each other.  As they join their lives in marriage, they also bring you together in a new relationship, creating new bonds of trust and ties of affection. Will all of you by God's grace, do everything in your power to preserve this marriage? Will all of you, who have supported these two in friendship and love, now bestow your blessing upon them? If so please show them your support by saying, "We will". [We will]

Wedding Opening Words

Hello everyone and welcome. I would like to thank you all for coming on this joyous day! Today we are here to celebrate and witness the Marriage of _________ and _________! I have to say I am honored to be standing up here with my close two friends!

On this day of your marriage, you stand somewhat apart form all other human beings. You stand within the charmed circle of your love; and this is as it should be. But love is not meant to be the possession of two people alone. Rather it would serve as a source of common energy, as a form in which you find the strength to live your lives with courage. From this day onward you must come closer together than ever before, you must love one another in sickness and in health, for better for worse, but at the same time your love should give you the strength to stand apart, to seek out your unique destinies, to make your special contributions to the world which is always part of us and more than us. Being assured that you are aware of the meaning of this ceremony.
